The Right Size Artwork for Above a Sofa, Bed, or Console - A Quick Reference for Designers

By Leah Justyce  ·  20 June 2026

A quick reference, not a rulebook

These are starting ratios I use when briefing scale with clients and studios - useful as a fast reference, but always adjusted for the actual room, ceiling height, and surrounding furniture.

Above a sofa

Artwork width should sit at roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa's width. For a standard three-seater around 2 metres wide, that puts the artwork in the 1.3 to 1.5 metre range. Leave 15 to 25cm of breathing room between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame.

Above a bed

Similar logic applies - two-thirds to three-quarters of the bedhead width for a single piece. For a queen or king bed, this often lands a large single work in the 1.2 to 1.8 metre range, which is exactly the scale I most often work at for bedroom commissions.

Above a console or sideboard

Consoles are narrower, so the same ratio produces a smaller, more vertical-leaning piece relative to a sofa wall. This is often the right spot for a striking but more intimate work rather than the largest piece in the room.

On an open, freestanding wall

Without furniture to anchor against, go by the wall itself. Most freestanding walls in living spaces and entries can comfortably take more scale than clients expect - this is where undersizing is the most common and most easily avoided mistake.

When the ratio and the room disagree

Ceiling height, adjoining sightlines, and how much else is happening visually in the space all override a simple ratio. This is exactly why I prefer to confirm scale against real room photos or a site visit before production begins, rather than working purely off dimensions on a plan.
