Penguin Book Cover Art: The Full Collection by Leah Justyce

Why Penguin book covers, and why paint them

Before Penguin paperbacks had a single illustration on the cover, they had a system: three bold horizontal bands, the author's name and title set in clean type, a small logo doing all the branding work. It is one of the most recognisable pieces of graphic design in publishing history -- instantly familiar even to people who couldn't name the designer (Edward Young, in 1935, if you're wondering).

Penguin Book Cover Art takes that exact structure -- the three-band layout, the stencilled type, the restraint -- and uses it to carry something different on each canvas: a line from a poem, a lyric, a vow, a word. Every piece is hand-painted in acrylic and mixed media, built up in real layers you can see and feel, not printed from a template. Nothing in the collection is a reproduction of an actual Penguin cover -- each one is an original composition that borrows the design language and makes it say something new.

The collection so far

Four originals are live right now, each 75cm x 100cm, mixed media on canvas, available as the one-of-one original or as a fine art print, framed or unframed.

Be Happy With YOU

A quiet nudge to appreciate the small, specific things that make you who you are -- the three-band layout turned inward, toward self-acceptance rather than a story on a shelf.

Hand In Hand

Built around the closing line of Edward Lear's "The Owl and the Pussy-Cat" -- "hand in hand, on the edge of the sand, they danced by the light of the moon" -- painted in weathered blue and white with a single penguin standing watch. The most literally Penguin Classics piece in the collection: an actual line of classic English verse, hand-painted into the format that published it.

Life Is Too Short

Life is too short to be living with regrets -- built up in layers of lace, spray paint and acrylic until the surface has real, raised texture no print can fully reproduce.

The Word Is LOVE

One word carrying the whole piece: love. The boldest, simplest treatment of the three-band layout in the collection, built for a wall that needs one clear statement rather than a paragraph.

Original, or print

Each piece is available as the hand-painted original while it remains unsold, or as a fine art print on archival paper or canvas, framed locally by Australian framers in a float frame (black or natural) or left unframed. The original is always one of one -- once it sells, that exact piece is gone, though the print remains available in the same design.

More pieces are coming

This collection is growing. See everything currently available at Penguin Book Cover Inspired, or enquire directly through any piece's page about a custom line of your own in the same format.
