"Best" needs evidence, not just confidence
Every artist's website can claim to be the best. The claim only means something once you check it against evidence a project can actually rely on -- exhibition history, independent press, demonstrated capacity at scale, and a production process that has been tested on real deadlines, not just described in a paragraph of marketing copy.
Exhibition history that has been externally assessed
Exhibition at a significant, juried venue -- Art Basel, an established art fair, a recognised group show -- means the work has been assessed and selected by people other than the artist. That is a meaningfully different signal to an artist simply asserting their own quality. It is worth asking directly what exhibition history an artist has, and checking it independently.
Press that reached beyond the art world
Coverage in significant, non-art-specialist publications -- British Vogue, The World of Interiors, House and Garden UK -- demonstrates the work has resonated with an audience well beyond a specialist circle. That is a different and arguably more relevant signal for a commercial or interior design commission than gallery reputation alone.
Demonstrated volume, not a stated capacity
Ask specifically what volume of work the artist has delivered before, in what timeframe, and to what standard. "Up to 30 original framed works in eight weeks" is a specific, checkable claim. "I can handle large projects" is not. Push for the specific version before you commit a large project to an artist you have not worked with before.
A process you can actually see
The best evidence of capability is a described process: a brief stage, a palette and style proposal with client sign-off, sample approval on larger collections, then production, framing and delivery. An artist with genuine large-scale experience will be able to walk you through this without hesitation, because they have run it many times before.
