Can One Artist Create the Art for an Entire Design Project, Not Just One Room?

By Leah Justyce  ·  4 October 2026

Why this question matters before you brief

A single statement piece for a living room and the artwork for an entire development or hotel fit-out are not the same brief, even though both start with the same question -- "where do I find an artist?" Most fine artists have built their practice around single commissions on their own schedule. Very few have built the capacity, process and consistency to create original art across a whole project, room by room, to one coherent palette.

What changes at project scale

A one-piece commission needs a good brief and a skilled artist. A full-project commission needs all of that plus a production process that holds a consistent palette and mood across dozens of individual works, a schedule that aligns with the build or installation timeline, and often labelling by room so the collection installs correctly on handover day. Sample pieces approved before full production begins become essential at this scale -- they protect the project and remove the risk of rework across a large volume of finished art.

What realistic capacity looks like

In acrylics, I can produce up to 30 original large-scale framed works in eight weeks without compromising quality. Oil commissions take longer because of drying time, so for volume projects with a fixed deadline, acrylic is typically the right medium. Any artist claiming to handle a full-project commission should be able to give you a similarly specific answer -- volume, medium, and realistic timeframe -- rather than a vague assurance.

How to check before you commit a whole project to one artist

Ask for evidence of a prior project at comparable scale, not just single-piece commissions. Ask how they manage palette consistency across a large number of works. Ask whether sample approval is part of their process before full production starts. And confirm framing, labelling and delivery are handled as part of the commission, not a separate coordination task left to you.
